Fat Joe Recalls Terrifying Studio Encounter With Shaquille O’Neal: “I Thought It Was My Last Day On Earth”
Hip-hop veteran Fat Joe is no stranger to larger-than-life moments in his career, but one memory involving NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal still stands out as one of the scariest — and funniest — encounters of his life.
In a recent story, Joe opened up about a night in Miami when he went to record in a studio that was completely pitch black. Walking inside, he immediately noticed the silhouette of a massive figure standing in the darkness.
“One of the scariest moments of my life was when I went to Miami to record,” Fat Joe explained. “I stepped into the studio and it was pitch black. No light. Then I saw the shadow of a very huge human being in the studio, and I was scared as hěll. And I said, ‘Holy sh!t. They’ve come to k**ll me. So this is my last day on earth.’”
As panic set in, Joe reached for the light switch — only to discover the towering figure was none other than Shaquille O’Neal himself.
“I turned on the light and standing there was Shaq O’Neal,” Joe recalled. “He said, ‘Big Fela, I just got a new team & I wanted you to be the first person to know.’ And I said, mehn, ‘you scared the hêll out of me.’ That guy is not a hũmän. He’s the biggest guy in the world.”
The hilarious story is a perfect mix of Fat Joe’s vivid storytelling and Shaq’s iconic presence, showing how even one of hip-hop’s toughest voices can be caught off guard by the sheer size and mystique of the 7’1” NBA Hall of Famer.
