Debbie Allen Confirms Passing of Her and Phylicia Rashad’s Mother, Vivian Ayers

Hollywood is mourning alongside sisters Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad, who have announced the heartbreaking loss of their mother, Vivian Ayers, a highly respected poet, scholar, and cultural visionary.
Ayers, who was Pulitzer Prize–nominated for her poetry collection Spice of Dawns in 1952, was far more than the mother of two legendary performers. She was a pioneering literary figure whose work explored themes of heritage, identity, and the Black experience, earning her a lasting place in the American literary canon.
Throughout her lifetime, Ayers championed education, the arts, and cultural preservation. She founded the Brainerd Institute Heritage in Chester, South Carolina, where she worked tirelessly to revive interest in classical education and ensure that African American history and traditions were honored and passed down.
Her daughters, both icons in their own right — Rashad, celebrated for her role as Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show, and Allen, an Emmy-winning actress, dancer, and choreographer — have often spoken about the deep influence their mother had on their artistic journeys.
In a statement, Allen shared the devastating news with fans, asking for prayers and love as the family mourns:
“Our mother, Vivian Ayers, has taken her final bow. She was our light, our teacher, and our guiding star.”
Tributes from across the entertainment and literary worlds have poured in, celebrating Ayers’ brilliance and her unwavering dedication to Black excellence.
Vivian Ayers’ legacy will endure not only through her writings but also through the generations of artists, scholars, and dreamers she inspired.
She is survived by her children, including Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry forward her spirit.
🕊️ May Vivian Ayers rest in peace.
